The neo-Renaissance building, which was built at the turn of the century, has a collection of the outstanding Hungarian painter Tivadar Csontvary Kosztka. The exhibition, opened in 1973, features more than 100 pictures of an only one and a half decade long lifework. Although the original profession of Csontváry was pharmacist, he soon became one of the most significant characters in modern painting. The 18th century Baroque canonry houses the exhibition of the painter Endre Nemes, based on the collection donated to his birthplace, Pecsvarad. Urban History Museum
The permanent exhibition of the museum shows the modern history of Pecs. The one-storey building with a drying-attic, called the ‘Tímár-ház’ (Tenner-house), used to be the site of leather processing in the 18-19th centuries. The collection includes several documents, photographs, works of art, patterns and models, displaying the most significant moments of the rich history of this town. Zsolnay Ceramics Collection, Amerigo Tot Collection, Photography Museum, Uitz Museum
The Zsolnay ceramics collection is hosted in one of the oldest (first mentioned in 1324) dwelling-houses in Pécs. The exhibition, based on the works of the former factory museum, displays the products of the factory in cronological order. The memorial room contains pieces of furniture and ornaments owned by the Zsolnay family. The exhibition of Zsolnay’s ceramics. Victor Vasarely was born in Pecs in 1908. From 1930 to his death in 1997 he lived in France. He first donated a collection of drawings to the museum in 1968. Later on he gave a collection consisting of hundreds of drawings, paintings, tapestries and sculptures, founding a basis of the exhibition. The official opening of the theatre was held on 5th October, 1895. For this occasion the local newspaper ‘Pécsi Napló’ issued a special edition to welcome the new theatre. The first performance of the company was ‘Bánk bán’, an opera by one of the greatest Hungarian composers Ferenc Erkel, which had a great success. In 1986, due to its dangerous condition, the theatre was closed down and the reconstruction of the whole building was completed only in 1991.
