Southern Transdanubia and Villány especially played a crucial part in the rebirth of Hungarian Viticulture. The success is spectacular and we can safely say that Villány is the most developed Hungarian Wine Region. Some attribute this success to the smooth cooperation of professionals established during the time of industrial cultivation others to the perseverance of the Svábs who settled in the region in the 17th-18th centuries. In the case of the Villány-Siklós region we can speak about two different cultures of wine related to two large settlements. Villány has become well-known recently with its fiery red wines and modern technology while Siklós and its white wines have been pushed into the background. Vine is grown on 2100 hectares in the Hungarian wine region that is farthest to the south. The Mediterranean climate of the area provides excellent conditions for the ripening of grapes, which is an important factor in the success of the region. This is the hottest, sunniest part of Hungary with long dry summers and a long growth period. The soil is loess mixed with red clay and brown forest soil on the limestone base of the Villányi mountains. Varieties of Grapes and Wines:
Villány has /produces full-bodied red wines that are dark ruby in colour rich in bouquet and aroma with high alcohol and tannin content. Grapes for these wines cover 70-80 % of the vineyards in the region and comprise some traditional Kadarka, a bit more of Blaue Portugieser and Kékfrankos, Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Zweigelt and Pinot Noir. They are the source of the most sought-after Hungarian wines as well as the popular Kékfrankos Cuvées. Fiery white wines from Siklós are Olaszrizling, Tramini, Ottonel Muskotály (Muscat Ottonel).

This 1300 hectare region can be found on the southern slopes of the Mecsek Mountains extending as far as Mohács where vine is grown on the estates outside Hungarian, Serbian and German towns and villages. The area is divided into the Pécs, Versend and Szigetvár districts, which are similar from viticultural point of view. It has a Mediterranean climate, even hotter and drier than the Villány region with a lot of sunshine and a long growing period. Thanks to the protective effects of the Mecsek, vine can be grown here even at the height of 440 metres. In this respect the region can only be compared to the Tokaj region. Among natural risks only drought is to be considered. The soil ranges from brown soil and brown forest soil on loess or Pannonian sand sediments on volcanic base rock. Excellent red and white wines are grown here. Varieties of Grapes and Wines:
After the Phylloxera epidemy Olaszrizling became the most widespread variety and it is still on top of the list. Other typical varieties are Furmint, Chardonnay, Cirfandli, Rizlingszilváni, Hárslevelű, Muscat Ottonel, Királyleányka, Tramini, Rajnai Rizling, Zengő, Zenit and Zöld Veltelini (Green Veltelini). Pannonia brand champagnes are an outstanding range of products from the region.
